The Artists: Laura Osnes and Aaron Tveit

The Song: "Falling Slowly"

The YouTube Link:
Where you heard it first: The song was written by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová for the 2007 film Once.  It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.  It was later featured in the stage adaptation of the movie.  Many also first heard it when it was covered by Kris Allen on American Idol.

Why it’s been stuck in your head: We here at ALNM adore Laura Osnes AND Aaron Tveit AND "Falling Slowly."  A combination of all three?  Pure Heaven.

Why you recommend it to our listeners: Because we need more people to freak out over this collision of amazing like we are.  And this all happened because Darren Criss pretty much wanted to create a Broadway version of Coachella.  Can we go next year?

Throwback Thursday

Let’s go back to: Kenan & Kel.  The late 90's sitcom that came about due to the popularity of Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell on the children's sketch comedy show All That.  And nothing is more 90's than a teen sitcom starring All That cast members and featuring a theme song by Coolio.

Why it means something to you or to our podcast:  The 90's were the decade that shaped your podcast hosts into the fabulous people we are today.  The fangirling over Legends of the Forbidden Temple was probably your first clue.  Few thinks can get us as nostalgic as a good Nickelodeon marathon.

Where can you find it now? Kenan is a cast member on the grown up version of All That, also known as Saturday Night Live.  Kel is currently starring on the Nickelodeon show Game Shakers.  Both reunited recently on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.  Check it out below:

The Artist: Halsey

The Song: "New Americana"

The YouTube Link:
Where you heard it first: I've been seeing Halsey pop up on my Tumblr feed a lot lately, so I figured I'd surf through her album a bit on iTunes.

Why it’s been stuck in your head:  All of Badlands is amazing and in constant rotation in my Spotify mix.  "New Americana" in particular gets stuck in my head at least once a day primarily due to the lyrics and a melody that gets you swaying your head right away.

Why you recommend it to our listeners: Halsey is amazing and Badlands is one of the albums you need to buy this year.

MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS (SPOILER-FREE) REVIEW

9/18/2015

What Is It: The Scorch Trials is the exciting sequel to last year's surprise hit The Maze Runner.  The story follows the Gladers who escaped from The Maze: Thomas, Newt, Minho, Winston, Frypan, and Teresa as they are taken to what they think is a safe house where they meet other kids who were also a part of different Mazes including one named Aris.  He explains to the Gladers that every night Mr. Janson (Game of Thrones' Aiden Gillen) comes into their dining hall and calls out a group of kids names.  Those kids are taken to their "new lives", but no one really knows what that means until one night when Thomas (Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien) and Aris (Jacob Lofland) break their way into a lab where they are harvesting something from the children that they have taken, including Teresa (Kaya Scodelario).  When Thomas tells the other Gladers what they saw, the boys don't believe him at first, but Newt (Game of Thrones' Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Minho (The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Ki Hong Lee) stand behind their friend and together, they find a way out of the compound and into the treacherous Scorch where they must find their way to the mountains while battling Cranks, sand storms, and other humans that stand in their way.

My experience: I saw this movie last night at one of the first showings in my local movie theatre.  After having seen the first movie, I was excited to see the second as well.  This movie was very different from the first with a lot more action, more characters, and Cranks popping out at you in every which way.  While it was slightly scary for me, who is a total chicken, it was a great movie and all the young actors were bringing their A-game against the successful adult actors: Aiden Gillen, Giancarlo Esposito (Once Upon A Time, Revolution), Patricia Clarkson (The Green Mile, Easy A), and Alan Tudyk (Serenity, Frozen).  Also, who doesn't love some hero!Dylan O'Brien?

Why You Should See It: If you haven't read the books, like me, you might be a little lost initially, but getting into the action of the movie and the minds of the characters makes this movie so enjoyable.  It's fast-paced and fun and you never feel like it's lagging.  It's definitely a movie that's not to be missed.  Dylan O'Brien, Ki Hong Lee, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster make a great team and you can really feel that their real-life friendship has translated to the bond the Gladers share with each other in the film.

The Future: This movie is just hitting theatres today, so make sure you check it out!  The dark movie theatre is the perfect way to beat the heat.  You can also look forward to its third installment, The Maze Runner: Death Cure hitting theatres on February 17, 2017.  The young stars of this film have so much ahead of them.  Starting in January, you can see Dylan O'Brien as fan-favorite goofy sidekick Stiles Stilinski on Season 5B of MTV's Teen Wolf .  In 2017, Kaya Scodelario will not only reprise her role as Teresa in Death Cure, but she will also take on the female lead in Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales.  You can also catch Aiden Gillen as Petyr Baelish/Littlefinger on HBO's hit Game of Thrones. Perhaps most notably, Alan Tudyk will be a part of three upcoming films from Disney Studios in 2016: Zootopia, Moana, and Star Wars: Rogue One.

With CHOC Walk less than a month away now, we here at A Little Nerd Music, the official Media Partners for the event, are busting out our walking shoes and getting ready for another great year walking for the kids at CHOC Children's Hospital.  We hope you all have had a chance to check out the cause, but if not, click here to sign up as a Walker or donate to the CHOC Walk.

CHOC Walk Check-In begins Saturday, October 3rd at the CHOC Walk Office located in on the first floor of the CHOC Commerce Tower at 505 S. Main Street, Orange, CA 92868

 Saturday, October 3rd:

Friday, October 9th:
12:00 PM - 8:00 PM

We know a lot of you participating may have a few questions and we're here to answer them!  Here's some of the most frequently asked questions:

Can I pick up t-shirts for someone else?
Yes, you may pick up shirts for other people on your team

What if I don’t know my team members’ sizes?
At the check-in office, staff members can look up the sizes for you, but it will take a few extra minutes to pull up a report.  If it’s easier, you can call/text your team members for their sizes in advance

How old do you have to be to pay the $65?  What about a senior?
The same rules apply as Disneyland Park, so anyone 3 years old and up must register as a Walker

Can we register the day of the event?
No, unfortunately you cannot register that day

What about prizes?  What do I qualify for?  When will I get them?
Prize packages will be shipped out at the end of the year, so you should get them in the mail sometime in January.
Check out which prizes you qualify for!

Can I still turn in money the day of the Walk or after the event?
You do need to have the preliminary $65 turned in to get a wristband, but you can continue to collect donations for prize packages until October 30th.

Why are my gifts not showing up in my fundraising total?
This year, your gifts aren’t recorded until we have the check/cash in our hands.  Once I confirm these gifts in your record, it will show up.

One of my team members didn’t put in their $65 but can they still get a shirt/wristband?
No, the preliminary $65 must be recorded in the computer in order to be able to pick up a wristband/t-shirt for a Walker.

I registered my son/daughter and all the team members just donated $65 to them.  That counts as team members, right?
No, each team member needs to be registered for the Walk in order for us to get an accurate number of participants.  They can register and have the $65 transferred to their account.

What’s the Luau?  Do I get to go if I’m registered for the Walk?
The Luau is a new event that’s held at Disneyland Hotel the night before CHOC Walk, but you can buy tickets for the Luau while they are still available.
Ages 3-11:    $35
Ages 12-17:    $55
Ages 18+:        $75
VIP Ages 3-11:    $75
VIP Ages 12-17:    $100
VIP Adult:    $150

What time does the Walk actually start?
Opening Ceremonies start in Disneyland at 6:15AM and the starting gun is at 6:30AM

What time do I have to be there?
We recommend that you get to Disneyland around 5:00AM because it takes about an hour to park, however the Walk itself doesn’t start until 6:30AM

Where do I park?  How much is parking?
Parking will be available in the Mickey and Friends parking structure which is the main parking structure off of Katella.  Parking is free.

Is the tram running?
The tram will not be running.  You’ll be walking on the tram path to get to the park

What places in Downtown Disney are open that early for food?

Let’s go back to: SNL Digital Shorts
With Andy Samberg hosting the Emmys this weekend, it seems fitting to throwback to the SNL Digital Shorts that The Lonely Island wrote for the show.  The Lonely Island was a comedy group made up of Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer, three guys from Berkeley, California who went on to be writers for Saturday Night Live and, of course, Andy became a huge name in comedy after he became a cast member on the show.  SNL Digital Shorts replaced Saturday TV FunHouse when Andy, Jorma, and Akiva joined the show as writers and it quickly became a fan favorite after the breakout hit "Lazy Sunday", which we profiled for Throwback Thursday way back in March.  Each Digital Short seemed to outdo the next by adding cameos by Blake Lively, Jessica Alba, Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine, Akon, Kendrick Lamar, Jake Gyllenhaal, Justin Bieber, Susan Sarandon, and so many more big-name celebrities.  They even made a special Digital Short for the 40th Anniversary of Saturday Night Live.

Why it means something to you or to our podcast: I've been a huge fan of Saturday Night Live ever since I was in middle school, which was the time that my parents allowed me to watch it.  I actually met Andy Samberg shortly after the release of "Lazy Sunday" and I think I liked him even more after that because he was such a nice guy.  It's amazing that three friends can go from being YouTube famous (when YouTube was just starting out) to huge stars in only a matter of a few years.  The Lonely Island's Digital Shorts are an iconic part of SNL history and will surely go down as one of the classics that people will still be recalling years later.
