![]() What program/tools do you use? I use a Wacom Bamboo Create tablet and a few different drawing programs. I’ve been getting used to Photoshop for the past few months and I really love it. Before that I’ve always used Paint Tool SAI. Lately I’ve been getting used to using a combination of tools from both though. Where do you get your inspiration? Lately I get it from almost anything. I’ll see an interesting person or place and be inspired and make up a story for them or it. I also draw a lot of inspiration from ideas and concepts that I find on tumblr or other places on the Internet. What are your primary fandoms? Although I don’t draw it as much anymore, the Percy Jackson fandom is probably my main fandom. But I’m also a part of the Harry Potter and Legend of Zelda and Steven Universe fandoms. I’ve also drawn fanart for the tiny Underland fandom as well. What project have you always wanted to do? I’ve always wanted to work on longer animated pieces, even if they’re just a few minutes long. At this point I’d really love to do something for the Percy Jackson or The Underland characters. I’d love to animate or collaborate on making a scene from the books and making it all finalized. What is your favorite work? I really couldn’t say at this point. I’m usually most proud of my animations, but I usually stop working on those at some point so I never actually finish them. However, I am proud of the concept I’ve come up with recently, “Beverly Starcatcher,” that I invented while working on my portfolio. I made a little gif of her hopping across the watery floor of a cave and I’m pretty pleased with how that turned out so I suppose that it my favorite for now. What is one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? There’s nothing really that the Percy Jackson fandom doesn’t know, so I’m going to go with the Harry Potter fandom; I’ve never actually read the books. I’ve listened to the audiobooks enough times to nearly have memorized the series, so I know the story of it very well, but I’ve never physically read the books.

What program/tools do you use? I use Photoshop CS6 for almost all my works along with an old Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet (that I should change very soon ><). I also use from time to time Painter 12 because its oil painting and watercolor tools are unique, but also Paint Tool SAI. When it comes to traditional art, I use Liquitex Acrylic painting, Copic markers, Prismacolor pencils, watercolors (nothing fancy, just what I find in supermarkets) but also ballpoint pens. Where do you get your inspiration? A bit everything! Movies I watch, books I read, songs I listen too, even people I see on the streets. Music videos from the 1990's are a big inspiration too. Also, a lot of my inspiration comes from other artists I find on the Internet or when I browse books at my local bookshop: James Jean, Adam Hugues, Ryan Meinerding, Alex Ross, or Chen Shu Fen & Common. Classic artists such as Leyendecker or photographers such as Pierre & Gilles are amongst my great influences too. What are your primary fandoms? Supernatural, first. I’ve been producing artworks for this fandom for six years now. Now, I’m also in the Marvel fandom, particularly Stucky (Steve Rogers/Bucky Barnes) and I even created an art blog especially devoted to the life of Bucky Barnes What project have you always wanted to do? A Supernatural fanbook, something that would be mix between sketches, comics and previously unseen B&W illustrations. Unfortunately, where I live, in France, printing this kind of things is extremely complicated because we don’t have a “dôjinshi” or a self-printed fanbook culture. It costs A LOT of money. What I also would like to do is illustrate medical articles for magazines or books. What is your favorite work? If you talk about my recent works, I really love Barnes, Rogers! For the love of God!! which took me about 40 hours to complete. When it comes to older works, I have a soft spot for some of my old Supernatural drawings such as Winchesters Laundry Day and The Whirligig Farm. What is one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? I collect rosaries. Also, I worked as a "voice" in Japan for French language learning methods. If you are Japanese and if you're learning French, there's a chance that the voice you hear on your textbook tape and that tells you to "open your book on page 4" is mine ^^ Give our interview below with petite-madame a read, then go check out her fantastic work!
![]() Give our interview below with Sam Beck a read, then go check out her amazing work! What program/tools do you use? I use Photoshop for almost all my work along with a Wacom Bamboo tablet. I sometimes like to ink traditionally, and when I do I use a Pentel brush and Pilot fine liners. Where do you get your inspiration? A lot of my inspiration comes from other great artists I find on tumblr. Right now a few of my bigger inspirations are Paul Reinwand, Jake Wyatt, Winston Young, and Jillian Tamaki. I draw a lot of inspiration from comic books, one of my all-time favourite artists is Taiyō Matsumoto. I also adore vintage illustrations, especially in advertising and package design. What are your primary fandoms? Dragon Age and Vikings at the moment! What project have you always wanted to do? My dream is to illustrate a children's book. My earliest memory of really appreciating art was reading Janell Cannon's books: Stellaluna and Verdi, and agonizing over the detail in the characters. Those books have stuck with me for a long time. Something a bit more fandom related- I would like to do a small Vikings zine! The more swords I can draw, the better. What is your favorite work? This small selection of Tarot cards is still something I look back at and like, it's also a project I would want to continue. What is one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? I love collecting random types of paper, like the inside of an envelope with a neat pattern, or paper samples from when I worked as a print designer. I keep telling myself that I will use them for an art project- but I can't bring myself to draw on them just yet. ![]() Below is our interview with fanartist cypii! Take a look at some of her awesome art after you read. What programs/tools do you use? Despite trying, I haven't found a comfortable way to work digitally yet, so apart from some adjusting & editing on photoshop I've stuck to traditional methods. Basically any tool that I think would improve the result of the picture I'm working on is alright with me, which leads me to doing a lot of mixed media work. My most usual tools however must be watercolors, (colored) pencils, black markers and drawing ink. Where do you get your inspiration? From various places... breathtaking art by others on tumblr, deviantART & Pinterest etc. and different moods and feelings I experience in my own life or through music, for instance. Song lyrics can be highly inspirational, which is why I sometimes name my pieces either after a song title or a carefully picked line from the lyrics. I tend to get very attached to all kinds of stories as well - no matter the genre or the platform - and especially the characters of those stories, which must be the primary reason behind all the fan art I draw. And not only the good parts of the story, but the bad as well; self-irony in my opinion is one of the juiciest forms of comedy, which is why I often choose to embrace rather than ignore the little flaws, plotholes and clichés that all kinds of fictional content inevitably has and turn it into something that, well, at least I find amusing. What are your primary fandoms? The main things I've been a fan of of during my life so far would be Kingdom Hearts, Fullmetal Alchemist (and a couple of other comics at some point), Amnesia the Dark Descent and Supernatural. There was also a period of time when I was a little more into Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and just recently I've gotten very excited about the Portal games (a little late perhaps, but that's how I roll). Although the only fandom I could claim to be active in at the moment is Supernatural, I have by no means forgotten any of the others listed here! I've grown up with them so they're a part of who I am, whether I like it or not. What project have you always wanted to do? Hmm... I've always been very fond of comics as a form of storytelling, and fan comics were in fact the phenomenon that originally got me into drawing fan art! Since then I've drawn several short comics and strips of my own whenever I've felt inspired, but a recurring dream of mine has been to some day come up with a longer graphic story of some sort. Which I actually have, a couple of times even, but I've always given up with them at some point. Making a good comic definitely isn't as easy as it may seem to some people, it requires a lot of courage, skill and determination, but I wish that someday I will come up with an idea that's worth to go through all those hardships. What is your favorite work? A tough question, since the style, mood and technique of my work tends to variate quite a bit, so eventually it's kinda tricky to try and compare... However, there are 2 kinda similar pics for different fandoms that I'm still very happy with, even a little bit proud of: "All-nighter" (ALNM Note: see image above), a Fullmetal Alchemist illustration that I painted with indian ink during highschool, and a colored Supernatural piece "But I promise you this." They're both very modest in a way, yet every time I see those pictures it just makes me think: that's it, that's essentially what I want to do. What is one thing fandom doesn't know about you? Many things, surely! Hmm... Well... I hate empty walls. Every wall that doesn't have something else to cover it (and most of the closet & cupboard doors) in me and my roommate's flat has been decorated in some way; posters, prints, pretty greeting/post cards, comics, stickers, pictures from old calendars... Nothing framed though, unfortunately, since there's nothing we could hang them on to. Take a look at out our interview below with artist renisanz, then check out her Tumblr to see more of her phenomenal work! ![]() What programs/tools do you use? I’m a traditional artist at heart, so everything starts with mechanical pencil and/or (sigma micron) pens on paper. I scan my lines into with an Epson scanner. I always bring my art into Photoshop to edit it, whether I’m coloring it or not. When I was in college, I used Photoshop CS2, and I couldn’t afford to upgrade. When I got a Wacom Intuos, Photoshop Elements 9 (which is just as good as the full version of Photoshop if you’re just going to be using it for digital painting) came with it, and I’ve been using that for a few years. A few months ago, I subscribed to Photoshop CC, and I’ve been using it ever since. It’s a lot easier to make gifs with it. I love that I can edit video in it as well, but I haven’t done it much in that particular program. When I’m making gifs, I use Wondershare Video Convert Pro, which allows me to convert basically any video/audio format into any other video/audio format that I want. Then I import that file into Photoshop as well begin editing. Where do you get your inspiration? I get my inspiration from various places. Many of my drawing are directly inspired by fic. Since I’m on tumblr quite often, I’ll get inspired by posts, meta, head canons, tags, fan mixes, gifsets…everything. What are your primary fandoms? They tend to vary with the television season. I say I can only handle a certain number of fandoms at a time, because it just takes so much mental (and physical, really) energy. I just watched Daredevil, and it was ah-mazing. I’m also currently into watching Arrow, The Flash, Scorpion, The 100, The Musketeers, Agents of SHIELD, and the MCU in general. What project have you always wanted to do? I’ve always wanted to write and draw my own story/comic. So, that’s still in the works. I have a few ideas. :) What is your favorite work? Of my own…? If I have to choose one, I will go pick “Perhaps” (ALNM Note: see image above). Along with being very (surprisingly) popular in the LBD fandom, it was also a turning point for me as an artist, a revelation of where I wanted my art to progress stylistically. If you mean in general, as far as type, I love a good AU fic. People are doing such brilliant things with them. For example the I Dream of Felicity AU by andyouweremine on tumblr is a must read, if you’re into that sort of thing. :) What is the one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? I’m really into researching my geneaology. I binged-watched Finding Your Roots w/ Henry Louis Gates, Jr. a few months ago, and that only fueled the fire. It’s this huge puzzle I’ve been trying to piece together. Just when I thought I’d hit a dead end, I find another bread crumb about a some distant relative, tucked away in my late grandmother’s photo album. Check out our interview below with artist cargsdoodles, then check her out on Tumblr to see more of her amazing work! ![]() What program/tools do you use? HP touchsmart tm2, wacom cintiq companion and I do everything in Paint Tool SAI Where do you get your inspiration? Ah a lot of places to be completely honest. Mainly comic book artists and illustrators and other fan artists I guess. I'm constantly looking for new artists to follow on tumblr and have a whole inspo blog devoted to finding inspiration and like 12 pinterest boards haha. Just naming a few artists off the top of my head I guess I would say my biggest influences are: Kevin Wada, Jake Wyatt, Jamie Hewlett, Phil Noto, Disney/Pixar, p much every One Direction and Lord of the Rings fanartists on tumblr What are your primary fandoms? Lord of the Rings/Hobbit currently but I used to do Marvel and One Direction a lot and I'll probably go back to them every once in a while. What project have you always wanted to do? Oh man I've always wanted to do an artist book of some sort. Or pair up with a writer for a fic. What is your favorite work? That I've done?? Uh jeeze I'm the worst at choosing. Usually cause I get a bad taste in my mouth whenever I look at my old work haha. Um I guess my art nouveau One Direction, Clint's Coffee Shop probably just because it took me forever, and tbh I'm actually pretty proud of my current Fee&Kee au even though its a bit ridiculous. What is one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? um I honestly have no idea? I'm pretty much an open book. If you ask I'll probably tell. Idk I have a very sarcastic and self deprecating sense of humor but I don't think it really translates very well online so I think a lot of people misinterpret things that I say because they just don't get that I'm joking. Check out our interview with rageprufrock, the first writer in our Love Your Fandom series! Then you can do a little reading over at AO3.
What is your method for writing (ie. by hand, on the computer, out of order…)? Always on a computer, always telling the story in linear order. I very rarely make significant edits in stories once I start, and I very rarely start stories unless I already have a clear idea of where the plot will progress. Writing longhand takes too long, and my hand ends up cramping up. Worse, my hand can’t keep up with my brain, so it turns the writing process into a frustrating exercise in self-torture. Where do you get your inspiration? I could not even begin to explain where the ideas come from. There’s this whole debate in philosophy about what consciousness is, and on the more fringe discussions of science, about whether or not consciousness comes from the brain, or if the brain is just the receiver for consciousness. Sometimes I think story ideas come to me pre-formed; sometimes I get drunk and think “this would be hilarious” and then nobody stops me. What are your primary fandoms? I’m fannishly migratory. Currently, I’m writing in MCU and reading whatever catches my fancy, which could be anything really. I currently have stories from Inception and The Borgias opened on my browser. Also Supernatural is my ride together die together fandom so you know, I deserve everyone’s pity for that awful life choice. What project have you always wanted to do? In my head I still have a fully articulated plot for an X-Files miniseries. What is your favorite work? This is liable to change at any time, but I love (Un)covered, an NCIS story where I made Anthony DiNozzo Antonia DiNozzo and used as an opportunity to do a lot of online designer imaginary shopping. What is one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? In college, my nickname was McKay (after SGA’s Rodney) because on top of my existing childhood allergies, I was developing some hella fun adult-onset ones in the form of most fruits. GOOD TIMES. ![]() Check out our interview below with artist katieisfinallytumbling, then check her out on Tumblr to see more of her amazing work! What program/tools do you use? I use Photoshop Elements 11 and a Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch Small. Pretty basic, as far as things go, but I’ve found that they’re easy to use and get the job done just fine! Where do you get your inspiration? My inspiration comes from many places, depending on how I’m feeling and what I’ve seen. Sometimes I’m inspired by a text post, a promotional picture, or a scene, and sometimes I’m inspired to do art out of spite. Most frequently, it’s a mix of the above with some procrastination thrown in. What are your primary fandoms? That tends to fluctuate with what fandoms are active, but the constants are Orphan Black and the MCU umbrella. Other contenders are Night Vale, Carmilla, and Rooster Teeth. What project have you always wanted to do? I’d love to do something animated! It’s a little beyond my scope right now, especially considering PSE doesn’t have any animation capability, but it’s something to keep in mind for the future! What is your favorite work? Definitely my portrait of Widow; I have a tendency to see magnified flaws once I finish a piece and I still actually like that one which is kind of a first for me. What is one thing fandom doesn’t know about you? I’m obsessed with small plants and cute planters. I have a succulent in a toy ibex planter and it’s adorable. Don’t even get me started on my candle collection. In an ALNM Podcast exclusive, theorlandojones is awesome. Ok, you probably all already knew that. But he was nice enough to answer a few questions for us! I don’t think we’ve been so excited since we started this podcast. Check them out below! -C
1. If you woke up 200 years in the future, what would you do? If I woke up 200 years in the future, I’d first binge watch all my favorite shows in whatever way people watch TV shows in the future. No spoilers people. Then I’d get some food and go tie one on with Nicolas Cage, he’ll still be around because he’s a vampire. They know how to party. 2. What are your hopes for your character moving forward? I know Frank is a married man but I’m hoping for a very special Mr. and Mrs. BAMF booty call episode. 3. What is your favorite charity? My favorite charity is jrCEOs (www.jrceos.org) a non-profit that teaches entrepreneurship, financial literacy and business fundamentals to minority and lower income middle and high school students. |
