Let’s go back to: That Thing You Do! In 1996, a movie written, directed, and co-starring the legendary Tom Hanks was released. Set in the summer of 1964, it told the story of the rise and fall of a band from Erie, Pennsylvania that rode the wave of their one-hit-wonder "That Thing You Do!" The story follows drummer Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) as he is asked by his friend Jimmy Mattingly (Jonathon Schaech) and Lenny Haise (Steve Zahn) to join their band The Oneders (which they say is pronounced like "wonders"). After winning a local talent show, they soon find themselves on a wave to stardom and bring along Jimmy's girlfriend Faye (Liv Tyler) when they are asked by Mr. White (Tom Hanks) to join popular record label Play-Tone on a Midwestern tour. The movie also stars Giovanni Ribisi, Ethan Embry, Rita Wilson, Charlize Theron, and Colin Hanks. Why it means something to you or to our podcast: I remember watching this movie with Christina in her dorm room in college and trying to school her in the importance and greatness of this movie. This has always been one of my favorite movies and the fact that it revolves around great music of the 1960's makes it that much better. In a strange coincidence, when my sister met her now-husband, she told me he was from Erie, Pennsylvania and I immediately said "That's where That Thing You Do! takes place!" Where can you find it now? Though it is not available on any streaming service, you can rent this amazing movie on Amazon or Netflix and I highly recommend you do! -- Kelly Lee
